Hello, church family! Here’s what you need to know for this week...
CELEBRATING | DEACONS AT SOUND CITY
Over the past 2.5+ years, we (including many of you) have been hard at work putting all the pieces in place to support, encourage, care for, teach, and shepherd all those God would send our way — all those who would come to call Sound City Bible Church, home. One of the biblical functions/ministries of the church that we've been missing up to this point (one we've been working toward implementing for quite some time now) is that of deaconship. Biblically speaking, deacons are committed to the important leadership task of assisting the Elders in certain leadership matters within the life of the church (Two key passages about deacons and deaconship for you to consider are: Acts 6:1–7, and 1 Timothy 3:8–13). The office of deacon is mentioned in the New Testament some twenty-nine times, highlighting the importance of this leadership role. This past Sunday we hit a milestone in our move toward deaconship at Sound City by sending out information to all our Covenant Members about nine deacon candidates that we've been talking with about deaconship over the past several months. Join us over these next few weeks as we continue to consider and pray about the installation of these nine candidates, and then plan to join us on October 29, when we hope to celebrate their installation as deacons together during our Sunday services. What an amazing evidence of God's grace to us that he would continue to build up more and more leaders to aid in serving and shepherding the people of Sound City! Please join us this week in prayerful celebration for God's grace to us in this.
THIS WEEK AT SOUND CITY BIBLE CHURCH
THIS SUNDAY’S SERMON | GOSPEL OF JOHN | JOHN 1:35–51
In week one of our John series, we looked at the profound mystery that the Word became flesh. Last week, in week two, we studied John the Baptizer and the ways that he serves as an example for us to follow as Christians. Now, in week three, we finally get to see Jesus in action as he calls his first disciples. In our look at John 1:35–51, we'll see that Jesus is not looking for fans or for admirers, but disciples — those who are committed to him heart and soul, and to following him through thick and thin. Join us this Sunday as we dig into this important passage together.
COMING SOON | MARK YOUR CALENDARS
OCTOBER 20–21 | STUDENT MINISTRY OVERNIGHT EVENT
Our first ever Student Ministry overnighter is coming up next month, on Friday October 20! Sound City Students and Cross and Crown Church are partnering for this awesome fall event, and all students currently in grades 6-12 are invited to join us.
The event will be hosted at Cross and Crown Church, where students will enjoy a pizza dinner, ice cream sundaes, several hours of fun games (including laser tag), singing and worship, and so much more! The cost is $10 per student, and each student will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. If your son/daughter has food allergies or preferences please plan accordingly.
OCTOBER 29 | COVENANT MEMBERSHIP INTEREST MEETING
If you call Sound City Bible Church home, and you’ve not yet joined us as a Covenant Member, then we’d like to invite you to learn more about membership at Sound City. Mark your calendars now for Sunday, October 29, during the 11am service, when we’ll be hosting our next information meeting for those interested in Covenant Membership at Sound City Bible Church. Pastor Shane will gather with those participating at 11am at the tables just up from the coffee area in the foyer. In the mean time, you can review the step-by-step, self-paced, Covenant Membership process by following the link below.
NOVEMBER 19 — SAVE THE DATE | FAMILY GATHERING & POTLUCK
Mark your calendars now for Sunday, November 19 for our upcoming Church Family Gathering at Lynnwood High School after our morning services. We’ll start with a potluck at 12:30, and then the meeting portion of our time (back in the theater) will follow, between 1:30pm–3:00pm.
We’ll be providing church and ministry updates, looking at what’s ahead, celebrating all that God’s been doing in and through Sound City Bible Church, and spending some time in prayer as well. While this meeting is primarily for those already committed to the church as Covenant Members and those pursuing membership in the near future, all those who call Sound City home are encouraged to attend.
For this week's featured resource(s) we're highlighting a blog post from Stacy Reaoch on the Gospel Coalition website, called “The Social Media Strategy of John the Baptist.” The big idea here is that John used his platform not to point others to himself, but to point them to Jesus.
If you're not currently part of a Community Group, come join us this Sunday for the Connect Group, from 3pm–5pm at the church offices in Lynnwood (4720 200th Street SW, Suite 200, Lynnwood, WA 98036). The Connect Group is our temporary-by-design Community Group that has as its primary goal: helping all who come to find the best possible long-term Community Group fit. It’s also a place to where you’ll meet new people, learn about biblical community, and experience it as well.
