Hey Sound City families,
Each week our Kids Ministry gathers to learn and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. In the month of April, we learned a lot about sin. We transitioned from talking about the various sins of the Israelites in the Old Testament into learning about why Jesus died for our sins and what that means for us. The 3 and 4 year olds did an activity where they named specific sins they struggle with and the teachers wrote the sins down and handed them to the kids. We then talked about how Jesus took the punishment for our sins, and we tore up the cards. As teachers, this kind of activity can be nerve-wracking because we just don’t know how much they can totally understand at such a young age. It was really humbling and beautiful to see how well these young kids understand sin. They shared sin struggles such as “I don’t clean up my toys when my mom tells me to,” or “sometimes I tell lies,” or “I eat all the candy really fast without leaving any for my brother.” It can be easy to view sin as “just the big stuff” like murder and stealing. These kids really grasped sinfulness in their own personal lives, and we can’t fully understand or appreciate God’s gift of grace to us until we understand our own sinfulness. It was such a great reminder when we ripped up our “sin cards” that our sin is truly nailed to the cross.
Over the next several weeks your child(ren) (3rd grade and younger) will be having a ton of fun as they learn from God's Word how to better know, love, and live for Jesus. Below is a breakdown of where we are going over the month of May as we continue in Unit 9.
Unit 9, Session 2 | May 5th, 2019
“Deborah and Barak” (Judges 4–5)
God used Deborah, Barak, and Jael to defeat Canaan. Similarly, God uses people to bring about our salvation through Jesus.
While God was really at work, He used people to complete His plan.
Unit 9, Session 3 | May 12th, 2019
“Gideon” (Judges 6–8)
Israel couldn’t save themselves and even Gideon wasn’t enough to save them. Only God, through Christ, can save us.
God sent Gideon, an unlikely judge, to rescue his people. But God was with Gideon and fought for His people.
Unit 9, Session 4 | May 19th, 2019
“Samson” (Judges 13–16)
God used Samson’s death to deliver Israel from their enemies. God used Jesus’ death to rescue believers from sin.
Samson died as a result of his sin. But his death was used by God to deliver the Israelites from their enemies.
Unit 9, Session 5 | May 26th, 2019
“Ruth and Boaz” (Ruth 1–4)
Boaz was a family redeemer. Jesus is our Redeemer who bought salvation for us by taking our punishment on the cross.
God provided Boaz to take care of Ruth and Naomi when they were in need. Boaz acted as a family redeemer.
Key Passage Unit 9:
Help your child review and memorize this units key passage:
– Isaiah 33:22: “The Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us.”
Big Picture Question Unit 9:
How does God accomplish His plan? God uses people for His glory and our good.
We are so blessed to have a constantly growing kids ministry and to have the privilege of teaching these kids the Gospel. We have a few opportunities to get involved in the month of April:
-Set up help: Do you want to help out in Kids Ministry but would prefer to serve with adults? Come help us set up! We have several 12-16 year olds that show up every Sunday at 7 am to help prepare the classrooms (rather than sleeping in!!) Every first Sunday we try to give our faithful youth volunteers a week off, but we definitely feel their absence. Set up simply involves arriving by 7:00 am, moving tables and chairs, setting up classroom walls, and distributing classroom supplies. You’re done by 8:00 am AND you get free breakfast and the chance to pray with other volunteers before the service starts. That’s it! If you are interested in joining the setup team you can email Jenn Ashby at firstname.lastname@example.org.
-Teachers for the 1s and 2s class at the 9:00 service: Do you love cuddling and playing with kiddos but dread preparing a lesson? Come love on our 1 and 2 year olds! We need consistent (at least 2x/month) volunteers in this class. They have a simple Bible story and game, lots of toys, and (the best part) snack time! Teachers for the 9:00 class arrive at 8:30 am to pray with the other teachers and are done by 10:30.
-Teachers for the 3s class at the 11:00 service: 3 is such a precious age and serving in this class gives you the chance to watch toddlers become little followers of Jesus. You get to lead them in prayer, songs, games and Bible stories designed for their age group. Many of these kids will pray out loud for the first time while in this class. What an honor to be a part of that! You also get the chance to start building relationships with these little ones. We need consistent teachers in the 11:00 class for this age group.
If you are interested in serving in EITHER the 1s and 2s class OR the 3s class, fill out the Kids Ministry Application at scbc.do/kidsapp.
We have added a few more items to our wish list on Amazon! If you feel called to serve the kids in this way, you can follow this link to have these items sent to the church offices: http://a.co/iQdWuNy.
Thank you for taking the time to review what your kids will be learning in church for the next month. Our goal is to partner with you, the parents, in helping every child to know, love, and live for Jesus.
For God's glory,
The Kids Ministry Team
