Younger Students Sunday Focus | September 9 - September 30

Hey Sound City families,

Each week our Younger Students class gathers to learn and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. Over the next several weeks your child(ren) (4th and 5th grades) will be having a ton of fun as well as grappling with some tough topics and digging into what God's Word teaches about living in today's world. We are excited to help your children to better know, love, and live for Jesus. Below is a breakdown of where we are going over the next several weeks.

New Unit | Who's The Boss of Me?

Sunday, September 9

Grapple Question: Why Do So Many People Boss Me Around?

Kids Learn: God Puts People In Charge

Dig Into the Bible:  Romans 13:1-5; 1 Peter 2:13-17

Has your child ever seen you after a bad day with the boss, or after you received a speeding ticket? How do you respond to those in authority over you? Help your child understand that even adults have to obey people who are in charge! Set an example for your child of respecting those whom God has put in authority. In your own home, work with your child to come up with a few rules that you both find fair—that way your child can feel some ownership in the rules and won’t feel so bossed around.

Grapple Question: When Do I Get To Be The Boss?

Kids Learn: Serving Leads To Leadership

Dig Into the Bible: 1 Samuel 17:32-37; 18:5-9; Luke 22:24-27; John 13:1-17; 1 Timothy 4:12

Share some funny stories this week about your earliest jobs. Did you flip burgers, deliver pizzas, or mow lawns? Gently explain to your preteen that nobody gets to start out as the CEO. Discuss ways you’ve grown in your career and explain how being a servant has enabled you to do more. Talk with your child about how you’ve seen serving lead to leadership.

Sunday, September 23

Grapple Question: What About When My Parents Are Unfair?

Kids Learn: Honoring Authority

Dig Into the Bible: John 12:49; 1 Corinthians 13:11-12; 1 Peter 2:18-25

This week, share with your child about a specific time you felt your own parents were being unfair to you when you were a child. Then tell about how you later understood why your parents treated you that way—if you did. Did you learn the reason they made you do a certain thing, or that what your parents did was really for your own good? Explain that sometimes things may seem unfair, but only because we don’t understand all the circumstances.

Sunday, September 30

Grapple Question: What If My Parents Ask Me To Do Something Wrong?

Kids Learn: God’s Law Is Above Man's Law

Dig Into the Bible: Daniel 3:8-30; Acts 5:25-29; Philippians 4:13

You have an awesome responsibility as a parent! God has entrusted to you the moral upbringing of your children. Your kids watch and hear everything you do and say, and they learn more from you than you probably realize. For example, when you ask them to tell a “little white lie,” they learn that lying is no big deal. Be careful with your choices—large and small—as your children are always learning from you.

Thank you for taking the time to review what your kids will be learning in church for the next several weeks. Our goal is to partner with you, the parents, in helping every child to know, love, and live for Jesus.

For God's glory,

The Kids Ministry Team
