Draw Near | Ancient Practices for Enjoying God Today

As Christians, we believe the fullest life is a life of daily intimacy with God. But how do we do this practically in the day to day chaos of life? How do we draw near to the God who has already drawn near to us, not to earn his approval, but to enjoy more fully the benefits of the relationship that has been established by the blood of Jesus?

To answer these questions, we’re looking to the ancient book of Psalms. When it comes to everyday practices that help us experience the joy of communion with God, the Psalms have long been the handbook for the church.

Sermon Questions

  • How has the Draw Near series as a whole encouraged you in your walk with Jesus?

  • Have you ever gone through a season in your walk with Jesus when he felt distant for no apparent reason? If so, what did you learn in that season?

  • Why is it sometimes hard to acknowledge to ourselves and our community when God feels absent?

  • What are some ways we can “talk back to ourselves” when our hearts are despairing?

  • If you are walking through a “Dark Night of the Soul” season, how can your community encourage you while you wait?

Prayer Points

  • Pray the that Lord would strengthen those in your group who feel far from him

  • Pray that the Lord would give us eyes to see what he’s teaching us in our own dark nights

  • Pray that God would begin to grow our collective heart for everyday mission as we enter into our series on Jonah as a church
